About Us

What is Aldebaran Capital, LLC?

Aldebaran Capital, LLC is a privately held, fee-based, registered investment advisory firm that specializes in the management of stock and bond portfolios for individual investors, businesses, and institutions. We share a simple, yet rarely practiced investment discipline that derives from the work of Benjamin Graham and his classic textbook Security Analysis (1934). Mr. Graham's investment principles continue to have a profound impact on today's most successful long-term investors, which include his protégé Warren Buffett, and a select few others. We are dedicated investment professionals who believe that delivering outstanding investment results requires a consistent philosophy, a commitment to value investing, and diligent/rational investment behavior. We have, and will continue to utilize this successful approach with our own capital and that of our clients.

Value investing seeks to identify discrepancies between stock market prices and the underlying values of businesses. Investments are made when companies (or shares of a company) can be purchased at a significant discount from what Graham called their "intrinsic value." The process is analogous to acquiring an asset for fifty cents on the dollar, or significantly less than the asset's appraised worth. Value investing tends to reduce risk, as an identified gap between price and value creates a margin of safety, a central concept of Graham's work. Our experience has shown that large discounts from intrinsic value are very likely to correct over time, thus leading to attractive long-term investment results. We practice value investing because it suits our temperament. Its principles contribute to the framework for a rational and disciplined approach to investing. It allows us to think independently and to conduct a long-term investment operation that exploits the recurrent optimism and apprehension often present in the markets.

Rather than limiting our investments to the size of a company's market capitalization, our experience indicates that it is more important to focus on the value of a company and its future prospects. Thus, our portfolios generally contain a mix of small, medium, and large companies. Historically, the majority of our assets have been invested in small to medium size companies. We utilize several research sources that provide us financial data on more than 10,000 publicly traded companies. In the end, our investment decisions are based on the value we receive for committing our clients' investment capital to a particular company.

We formed Aldebaran Capital, LLC for investors who would like to participate in an investment program which seeks undervalued equity investment opportunities. As owners and managers of the company, we practice a long-term, value oriented approach to investing which we have consistently applied over many years. Our investment strategy is predicated on the powerful effect of the long-term compounding of returns and an aversion to permanent monetary loss. Aldebaran's success as a firm is built upon a foundation of commitment to Value Investing, Superior Investment Performance, and Excellent Client Service.

Where did the name Aldebaran Capital originate?

The name of our firm was chosen because it carries with it several analogies to our investment philosophy. Aldebaran is a giant star in the constellation Taurus the Bull. When viewed in the night sky, Taurus forms a 'V" with Aldebaran at the top marking the eye of the bull. Aside from the natural analogy that we are long-term "bullish" on the stock market, the word Aldebaran means "the follower." Our investment philosophy is engrained in the value oriented investment principles set out by Benjamin Graham in the 1930's. For well over a decade we have studied, and are "followers" of this simple, yet rarely practiced investment discipline.
